Structural strengthening and seismic improvement

Project description
The project covered the structural strengthening and seismic improvement of a historic school building, aiming to increase its safety without altering its layout or architectural character.
A steel endoskeleton was inserted inside the existing masonry, with columns and beams connected to the load-bearing walls and resting on new reinforced concrete footings. A new floor diaphragm at attic level stiffens the building and ties the walls together; the existing timber roof was strengthened and a new suspended ceiling was installed in the main rooms.
